Emmalyn Freeze benefit ride set for Saturday

A benefit ride for 12-year-old Emmalyn Freeze is scheduled for Saturday.

The ride, which will begin in Mt. Morris and travel around Ogle County, was organized by Monica Miller, co-founder of the riding club, Bitchin’ Bulldogs.

“What we’re doing is trying to raise money for families in need,” said Miller, who also is Emmalyn’s cousin. “This is going to be our first attempt.”

Emmalyn, of Mt. Morris, has Chiari Malformation, a neurological disorder where the cerebellum extends out of the skull and into the spinal canal, among other medical issues. She has had 43 surgeries since age 3.

“Without her attitude and her smile and her bravery and her strength, this road would be so much harder,” said her mother, Stephanie Freeze.

The Freezes will set out for California — where Emmalyn’s neurosurgeon is located — on Monday so the doctor can address some “high-pressure issues” Emmalyn is facing.

The high pressure in her head is causing extreme pain, Freeze said. It should be addressed by an existing shunt, but for some reason, the shunt is not doing enough to alleviate Emmalyn’s pain.

The benefit ride will begin at Idle Hour, 115 South Wesley Ave., Mt. Morris, Miller said. Rider registration is from 10-11 a.m.

Wesley Avenue in Mt. Morris will be blocked off between East Center Street and East Main Street from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., Village President Phil Labash said. Between 300 and 400 attendees are expected, he said.
