Three things to know about passports

Planning some international travel? Don’t pack your bags just yet. Whether renewing a passport or applying for a new one, here are three things Crystal Lake Travel wants you to know when it comes to passports:

1. How long does it take to get a passport?

Currently, routine service can take up to 18 weeks from the day an application is submitted to the day a new passport is received. The time frame includes up to 12 weeks for processing and up to 6 weeks for mailing times on the front and back end, according to the U.S. State Department’s passport operations. Expedited service, (which tacks an extra $60 onto the cost), can take up to 12 weeks from the day an application is submitted to the day a new passport is received.

2. Can passport renewal be done by mail?

You are able to renew by mail if you can answer yes to all five of these U.S. State Department questions:

  • Was the passport issued within the last 15 years?
  • Is it undamaged other than normal wear and tear?
  • Is it issued in your current name?
  • Were you at least 16 when you got it?
  • Do you have your passport in your possession to submit with your application?

If you’re not eligible to renew your passport by mail, visit the U.S. State Department passport operations page to learn the steps for how to apply in person.

3. How much does it cost?

Currently, a new adult passport book for adults age 16 and older costs $110 for the application fee and $35 for the execution fee, for a total of $145. Expedited service costs an additional $60. Passport fees for children under 16 are $80 for the application fee and $35 for the execution fee, for a total of $115.00.
