Supporting the Community with Immanuel Lutheran this Holiday Season

Since March 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic has changed a great many things in our lives and livelihoods.

Businesses, schools, and churches have altered virtually everything they do, and in some cases, have stopped altogether. Through these uncertain times, however, there is much good. Communities and individuals are banding together to help and support one another like never before.

Community support is especially important this year, and Immanuel Lutheran in Crystal Lake is taking the initiative to help those in need in our community – and beyond – this holiday season, and you can be part of it.

The congregation of Immanuel serves the needs of those in the community, the country, and internationally. Throughout the pandemic, Immanuel has delivered gifts and cards to first responders, health care workers, students, teachers, and the elderly. Helpful and supportive events and projects are coordinated and facilitated through weekly e-letters, social media, and

A new initiative began on November 1 reminding us that in our abundant lives it’s not about the bounty, it’s about the blessings.

“The ‘Blessing Blitz’ provides ideas and opportunities for people to give back, volunteer, and serve,” says Director of Connect Ministry, Sharon Tieman. The Blitz features many options for participation, including donations to various organizations, serving neighbors in need, volunteering with community service organizations, or simply being a good listener to someone struggling with current circumstances.

Operation Christmas Child is an example of a Blessing Blitz opportunity.   Donors fill shoeboxes with toys and personal items that are then sent to children around the globe.   Last year Immanuel Church, School, and Upward were blessed to fill 500 boxes.   They welcome community participation to meet and surpass the 500 mark this year; empty shoeboxes may be picked-up at the church/school and returned by November 15.

The Giving Tree filled with branches of gift suggestions available for adopting commences in December at Immanuel.   This is an opportunity to share blessings with students and families from Immanuel’s Kid’s Hope partner, South Elementary School in Crystal Lake.

“We want to empower people to serve and share God’s love with their friends, neighbors, and the community. We sponsor events and projects, but also give starter ideas to help people serve in ways that motivate and excite them,” Tieman continues.
