Two children suffered minor smoke inhalation during a fire Wednesday evening south of McHenry, the McHenry Township Fire Protection District said.

Crews responded about 5 p.m. Wednesday to a report of a house fire in the 4800 block of Broadway in unincorporated McHenry County where they found smoke coming from the back of the home, according to a news release.

A fire was discovered on the rear deck, extending into the interior of the house, according to the release. Crews extinguished the fire and opened up walls to ensure damage was contained to the exterior of the house.

The residents were home at the time of the fire and were alerted it by a passerby who could see the smoke from Broadway Street, according to the release. Two children were treated for minor smoke inhalation by paramedics and released at the scene.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, according to the release. The home remained habitable and the amount of damage was unknown at the time of the release Wednesday evening.
