63-year-old Richmond man killed in crash in Alden Township identified

The crash remains under investigation, the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office said

The 63-year-old Richmond man killed earlier this month in a crash involving a medical transportation company van was identified Monday by the McHenry County Coroner’s Office as Timothy Volden.

Volden, who had originally been identified as from Harvard, had been in a 2007 Dodge Grand Caravan driven by an 82-year-old Rockford man employed by a medical transportation company when it struck another vehicle the morning of Aug. 13, the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office said at the time.

Volden was pronounced dead at the scene, the McHenry County Coroner’s Office said in a news release Monday. An autopsy was performed Aug. 16 and toxicology results still were pending.

The crash was still under investigation as of Monday, McHenry County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Emily Matusek said Monday. No citations have been issued.

Police and fire officials from multiple agencies responded at 11:45 a.m. Aug. 13 to the intersection of Alden and O’Brien roads for a two-vehicle crash with entrapment, the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release issued Aug. 16.

A preliminary investigation found that the van was traveling west on O’Brien Road approaching a stop sign when it pulled into the intersection in front of a 2012 Toyota Highlander, according to the release. The Highlander, driving south on Alden Road, did not have a stop sign while the van did.

Volden was the sole passenger of the van and was not wearing a seat belt, according to the Aug. 16 release. The drivers of both vehicles and the passengers in the Toyota all were wearing seat belts, according to the release.

The driver of the Toyota, a 37-year-old Middleton, Wisconsin, man, and two juvenile passengers were treated and released at the scene, according to the release.

Alcohol is not believed to be a contributing factor, the sheriff’s office said.
