Huntley’s Freeman Road to close this week

Failed culvert will be replaced east of Carriage Way

A portion of Freeman Road in Huntley will be closed Monday through Friday as workers replace failed pipes under the road.

According to the village’s website, workers will be replacing a failed culvert underneath the road. The culvert is located about 400 feet east of Carriage Way. Motorists traveling of Freeman Road east of Route 47 will be impacted by the project.

Officials said detour signs will be posted, giving motorists who need to use Freeman Road the option of detouring to the north or south around the project.

The project involves digging up the road and replacing the entire 2-foot metal culvert, which the village said has failed. It will be replaced with a new, 4-foot reinforced concrete culvert underneath the road.

According to frequently asked questions about the project posted on the village website, the failed culvert was discovered in May 2020 after a sinkhole was found. The existing 2-foot culvert was partially collapsed, which caused the sinkhole to form.

Residents of the Prairie Oaks subdivision will be most impacted by the project. The village advises residents and visitors to access the subdivision from the west instead of the east where the project is taking place.
