Calendar: Memorial Day events in McHenry County

Saturday

  • Richmond: A ceremony organized by American Legion Post 253 will start at 10 a.m. at Stevens Park, located at the intersection of Broadway and Main streets. Free coffee and doughnuts are being offered afterward at Richmond Cafe, 10321 N. Main St., to those with an event coupon.

Monday

  • Cary: A parade, organized by Cary-Grove AmVets Post 245, will kick off between 10:15 and 10:30 a.m., starting at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, First Street and Three Oaks Road, and heading south on First Street to Cary Veterans Park. A ceremony lasting about 10 to 15 minutes will follow.
  • Crystal Lake: A parade, organized by the city of Crystal Lake and American Legion Post 171, will kick off at 11 a.m., starting at Crystal Lake Central High School and proceeding north on South Walkup Road, east onto Franklin Street and north onto Williams Street through downtown Crystal Lake, and then west on Woodstock Street to the Union Cemetery, where a ceremony will follow.
  • Fox River Grove: A parade, organized by Cary-Grove AmVets Post 245, will kick off at 8:30 a.m. at Algonquin Road School, 975 Algonquin Road, heading along Algonquin Road to South River Road and then straight to the baseball diamond along the Fox River in Lions Park. A ceremony lasting about 10 to 15 minutes will follow.
  • Huntley: A parade, organized by American Legion Post 673, will kick off at 11 a.m. from Village Hall, 10987 Main St. As in previous years, the parade will go west on Main Street to Woodstock Street, turn right to go north and disperse from there. At the conclusion of the parade, there will be speakers and a presentation.
  • Johnsburg: A ceremony to honor fallen soldiers will start at 9 a.m. on the bridge over the Fox River by the Waterfront Hotel and Marina, and a procession will kick off from there at 9:30 a.m. and head northeast on North Chapel Hill Road to the Johnsburg Community Club, 2315 W. Church St. There will be speakers and readings from a high school essay contest followed by a luncheon featuring pulled pork, snacks, soda and beer, and a Johnsburg Tigers baseball game at the park by the community club. Parachutists are expected to drop from a plane and land on the baseball diamond.
  • Lake in the Hills: Lake in the Hills American Legion Post 1231, 1101 W. Algonquin Road, will hold a Memorial Day ceremony at 10:30 a.m. followed by a pig roast at 2:30 p.m.
  • Marengo: Ceremonies commemorating fallen soldiers organized by American Legion Post 192 will take place at five cemeteries starting at 8:30 a.m. with Riley Cemetery, then 8:45 a.m. at Maple Street Ceremony, 9:30 a.m. at Catholic Cemetery, 10 a.m. at Spencer Park and 10:30 a.m. at City Cemetery.
  • McHenry: City chapters of American Legion Post 491, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4600 and the Polish Legion of American Veterans are collectively putting on a ceremony starting at 10 a.m. at Veterans Memorial Park, 3400 Pearl St. There will be a procession through the park to lay a wreath in honor of fallen soldiers, and it will move to Webers Park, where veterans groups will send a wreath down the Fox River and fire a volley. The veterans organization will visit cemeteries in McHenry and Johnsburg throughout the day to honor resting veterans.
  • Spring Grove: A procession of local American Legion and VFW members, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts will depart from the Spring Grove Fire Protection District station on Blivin Street heading south at 9 a.m. and will arrive in Horse Fair Park, 8105 Blivin St. A ceremony will start about 9:15 a.m. and will include a national anthem performance by Richmond-Burton Community High School’s Makaelyn Ortiz, a reading of fallen soldiers’ names and a gun salute by veterans.
  • Woodstock: A ceremony to honor the nation’s military members will start at 10:30 a.m. in the Historic Park on the Square, followed by a parade that will kick off about 11 a.m. from Dean Street School, 600 Dean St. It will proceed through the Square on Dean Street, exit on Jackson Street and continue west on Jackson and then turn north on Oakland Street and east on Judd Street before concluding.
