McHenry VFW Post 4600 awards scholarships to five students

Recipients hail from McHenry, Woodstock, Crystal Lake and Des Plaines

McHenry Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4600 awarded $1,000 scholarships to five area students through its Peter A. Baker scholarship program.

This year’s recipients include Riley Whittenhall of Des Plaines, Alexander Florez of Crystal Lake, Ruben Martinez of Woodstock, Hunter Elsberg of McHenry, and Felicity Elsberg of McHenry, according to a news release.

The scholarship process was open to high school seniors and graduates who are the child of active-duty personnel, U.S. veterans, National Guard members or Reserves members.

The Peter A. Baker Scholarship has been awarded by Post 4600 for 15 years. This scholarship fund was started with a donation to the post from Peter Baker & Son Co.

Founded in 1915, by Peter Baker and his son, Arthur Baker Sr., as a roofing business, the company is currently under the control of fourth-generation brothers. Today, they are one of the largest asphalt paving companies in northern Illinois.

Applications for next year can be picked up at the VFW post, located at 3002 W. Route 120 in McHenry, or by calling 815-385-4600.
