McHenry County College’s annual Day of Giving, where students, staff, families, alumni and the community are encouraged to donate to support the college’s Student Success Fund, is set for Wednesday.

This fund provides MCC students with financial support to handle unexpected emergency expenses, such as medical bills, essential vehicle repair, technology needs or utility bills, according to a news release.

The college seeks to improve retention when unexpected circumstances might potentially affect their ability to stay in school, the college said in the release.

”Our students have remained resilient and dedicated while navigating the new circumstances of the last year and a half,” Friends of MCC Foundation Executive Director Brian DiBona said in a statement. “Our goal is to raise $5,000 to help these students tackle any financial obstacles that make them feel like they can’t keep going.”

In 2021, the foundation raised more than $43,000 for the Student Success Fund, and more than $105,000 has been provided been provided to students since the fund started in 2017.

”I give to MCC because education is the most guaranteed method to change the trajectory of a person’s life,” Friends of MCC Foundation board member Corey Tafoya, who also serves as the superintendent of Harvard School District 50, said in a statement. “Giving to the Student Success Fund at MCC ensures that generations of McHenry County residents can assuredly pursue their dreams locally.”

The Friends of McHenry County College Foundation is a nonprofit organization that supports MCC students and is the sole organization authorized to raise private funds on behalf of the college.

Along with the Student Success Fund, the Foundation offers hundreds of student scholarships; operates Education to Empowerment, a scholarship and mentoring program for female students; and manages the College’s Alumni Association and related alumni events, according to the release.

Donations to the Foundation are tax deductible, and all proceeds go directly to helping students. College supporters can make gifts of any size at www.mchenry.edu/giving or by calling 815-455-8721.
