The Huntley Police Department issued 11 citations during the stepped-up enforcement period tied to the Memorial Day holiday, according to a news release.

The tickets included four seat belt violations, four for speeding, one for a cellphone violation, one for improper passing of an emergency vehicle and one for disobeying a traffic control device.

Although Illinois’ seat belt compliance rate last year was 94.6%, unbelted vehicle occupants accounted for more than half of those killed in traffic crashes, according to statistics cited by Huntley police.

The enforcement campaign seeks to change the behavior of those who don’t buckle up and is funded using federal highway safety funds from the Illinois Department of Transportation.
