A 59-year-old man remained at the McHenry County Jail on Friday on charges alleging that he impersonated another man while trying to buy an $87,000 Jeep from a Crystal Lake dealership.

Richard A. White, listed in a police complaint as being homeless, is charged with attempted identity theft, false impersonation and attempted theft.

The most serious charge, attempted identity theft, typically is punishable by three to seven years in prison.

He remained at the county jail in Woodstock on a $50,000 bond. White would need to post $5,000 bail to secure his release.

Crystal Lake police arrested White on April 1 after he allegedly impersonated another man while trying to buy a Jeep Grand Cherokee at Brilliance Honda in Crystal Lake, court records show.

It was not immediately clear what steps White might have taken to impersonate the alleged victim.

Last week, a McHenry County judge appointed an attorney from the McHenry County Public Defender’s Office to represent White on the charges.

His next court appearance is scheduled for April 23.
