High school sports roundup for Tuesday, Jan. 11

Marian Central’s Cale McThenia will throw plenty of long passes to Christian Bentancur on the football field the next two years as Hurricanes quarterback.

The two hooked up on the basketball court Tuesday night to beat Joliet Catholic, 46-44, at the buzzer in their East Suburban Catholic Conference game.

McThenia fired a pass the length of the court with 1.1 second remaining and the 6-foot-5 forward outbattled Hilltoppers defenders to catch the ball and hit the game-winner.

Bentancur finished with a game-high 26 points in the victory as the Hurricanes (8-11, 1-5) picked up their first conference victory.

McThenia hit two 3-pointers and finished with 10 points.

Marengo 61, Richmond-Burton 51: At Marengo, the home team battled its way to a Kishwaukee River Conference win over the Rockets.

Brock Adamson led Marengo with 22 points and Matt Volkening added 17 points. Jacob Nelson had 11 points for R-B.

Westminster Christian 57, Alden-Hebron 52: At Hebron, Thomas Webber put up 27 points for the Giants but it wasn’t enough to pull off a win.

Justin Gritmacker added 11 poinst for Alden-Hebron (2-10).

Girls Basketball

Cary-Grove 43, Dundee-Crown 24: At Carpentersville, Emily Lukowski scored 17 points to lead the Trojans (10-6, 4-3) to an FVC victory over the Chargers.

Avery Nielsen tossed in 15 for C-G.

Prairie Ridge 36, Hampshire 22: At Crystal Lake, the Wolves outscored the Whip-Purs 10-1 in a decisive second quarter, which led them to an FVC win at home.

Karsen Karlblom led PR (16-3, 5-2) with 14 points and Elani Nanos added eight points.

Alden-Hebron 40, Westminster Christian 13: At Hebron, the Giants locked down Westminster Christian and allowed no player to score more than four points against them as they improved to 10-7 overall.

GIRLS BOWLING

Harvard 2,275, Johnsburg 2,269: At J’s Lanes, the Hornets picked up their first victory by a razor-thin margin, defeating the Skyhawks by just six pins in Harvard.

Hailey Berkholtz notched the match-high series of 445 and team-high game of 173 for the match to lead the Hornets to victory. Ana Bates was tops for Johnsburg with a team-high 430 series as well as the highest game of the match — a 207 in game three.

BOYS BOWLING

Johnsburg 2,786, Harvard 2,173: At J’s Lanes, the Skyhawks came out on top on the road in Harvard thanks to a strong all-around performance.

All six of Johnsburg’s bowlers finished between 426 and 487 over the three game series, with Tommy Oeffling accounting for the latter — the high series of the match. Johnsburg’s Henry Ray had the high game of the match with a 194 in game two and Logan Jacobs led Harvard with a high series of 481 and a high game of 175.
