High school sports roundup for Saturday, Sep. 18

Harvard survived two penalty-kick goals from Jacobs to pick up a 3-2 nonconference win in Algonquin on Saturday.

Gabino Esquivel scored twice, including the eventual game-winner with one minute remaining in regulation. Martin Quientero also scored for the Hornets. Ricardo Flores made eight saves at keeper.

Mundelein 2, Crystal Lake South 1: At Crystal Lake, the Gators were unable to hold a 1-0 halftime lead in their nonconference match. Michal Dejworek scored South’s goal in the first half, but Mundelein answered with two goals in the second half to secure the win.

Libertyville 1, Huntley 0: At Huntley, the Red Raiders’ offense stalled in a shutout loss.

Aidan Huber made two saves and allowed no goals in the first half and Ethan Kornas made three saves and allowed the lone goal in the second half for Huntley (7-2, 3-0).

Warrior Soccer Classic: At McHenry, Marian Central went 2-1 on the day. The Hurricanes shut out Freeport, 4-0, and notched a 1-0 shootout victory in penalties against North Ridge Prep after playing to a scoreless tie through regulation.

In the third match, Marian came out on the other end of pks after another scoreless tie at the end of regulation. McHenry came away with the 1-0 win after winning the shootout, 5-4.

VOLLEYBALL

Wheaton Classic: At Wheaton, Prairie Ridge (5-9) took second in the Bronze Bracket. The Wolves opened with wins over Waubonsie Valley, 17-25, 25-22, 25-13, and Rosary, 25-19, 25-23, to advance to the Bronze championship match.

They then lost a back-and-forth finale, 22-25, 25-15, 26-24, to St. Charles North, placing 18th overall.

Hampshire Tournament: At Hampshire, the Whip-Purs defeated Woodstock, 25-20, 25-20.

Genoa-Kingston won the tournament title, going 5-0 on the day and defeating Burlington Central in the championship match.

GIRLS TENNIS

Palatine quadrangular: At Palatine, Crystal Lake Central went 2-1. The Tigers beat Hononegah, 6-0, and Palatine, 5-1, while losing 5-1 to Warren. Olivia Johnson and Megan Rapisarda were a perfect 3-0 at No. 1 doubles. All three of their victories came in straight sets.

Central is 14-3 overall this season.

Huntley quadrangular: At Huntley, the Red Raiders went 2-1 on the day, taking down Lakes, 5-0, and Boylan, 4-1, while losing 3-2 to Conant.

Kate Burkey and Emily Chong led the charge for Huntley with wins in all three matches at No. 2 doubles. The Raiders are 14-4 this season.

GIRLS GOLF

Rockford Guilford Invite: At Ingersoll in Rockford, Prairie Ridge’s Elizabeth Tucker and Harvard’s Julia Chupich tied for third with matching 5-over-par 76s. Huntley (358) finished eighth as a team and the Wolves (364) took ninth in the 23-team tournament.

Aubrey Dingbaum shot an 83 to lead Huntley, followed by Victoria Hassels (89), Abby Goraj (93) and Haley Szramek (93).

Prairie Ridge’s other three scores were from Jenna Albanese (88), Ella Olas (99) and Bri Baron (101).

Harvard (396) was led by Chupich, Aaralynn Schneider (98), Sophia Elliott (110) and Allie Scott (112).

Hampshire (407) was led by Lily Farnam with a 92, Jaina Farnam with a 102, Mikaella Moraga with a 103 and Lorna Bachta with a 110.

BOYS GOLF

Charger Invite: At Randall Oaks in West Dundee, Woodstock North co-op finished seventh in a 23-team field with a team score of 327. Frank Ferru led Woodstock with a 79, Aidan Sivore tallied a 82 and Luke Trewyn and Brady Heeren each had a 83.

BOYS CROSS COUNTRY

Woodstock Ryan Byrne Festival: At Emricson Park, Woodstock won the varsity boys race in the flighted meet in a close finish with 22 points. Grayslake Central (23) was second and Prairie Ridge (24) was third.

Runners were placed and scored against alike runners from the opposing teams, so each flight 1-7 counted the same toward team scores.

Woodstock’s top finishes were Alex Wickersheim (fourth in Flight 2), Aryan Patel (first in 4) and Thomas Sieck (fourth in 7).

Prairie Ridge had three flight winners with Will Gelon (1), Daniel Llanquiman (5) and Ian Mahon (6), along with Kevin DeGroot, who was runner-up in Flight 7.

McHenry’s Nick Schmitz was fourth in Flight 2.

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY

Woodstock Ryan Byrne Festival: At Emricson Park, Grayslake Central (13), Lake Forest (19) and Vernon Hills (22) were the top three teams in the flighted race.

Runners were placed and scored against alike runners from the opposing teams, so each flight 1-7 counted the same toward team scores.

McHenry’s Danielle Jensen was third in Flight 1 and Prairie Ridge’s Rachel Soukup was fourth.

McHenry’s Alyssa Moore was fourth in Flight 2.

Prairie Ridge’s Sophie Robinson (3), Olivia McPherson (4) and Addison Taege (5) all took fourths.
