High school sports roundup for Thursday, June 10

Crystal Lake South junior Jackson Schuetzle and Burlington Central junior Luke Welker each earned a berth in the quarterfinals of the IHSA Boys Tennis State Tournament on Thursday by posting three consecutive straight-sets wins in Class 1A.

Schuetzle, a 3-4 seed, started the tournament by defeating Metamora’s Alexander Schroff, 6-0, 6-0. The Gators’ top singles player then swept Bloomington’s Ian Turnbull, 7-5, 6-1, and Troy Triad’s Jaden Henderson, 6-3, 6-0.

Welker, a 5-8 seed, defeated Lakes’ Gavin Murrie, 6-0, 6-0; Metamora’s Bryton Short, 6-2, 6-1; and Springfield’s Noah Williams, 6-2, 6-3. Welker next faces Beacon Academy’s Peter Adams Agresti, a 3-4 seed, at Buffalo Grove.

Prairie Ridge’s doubles team of Nathan Kim/Samuel Kim, a 9-16 seed, opened with a 4-6, 6-4 (8) loss to Alex Slaymaker/Mason Smith (Geneseo) but rebounded to win three straight matches. Kim/Kim notched a straight-sets win over Joseph Doerfler/Nicholas Doerfler (Chatham Glenwood) to earn the duo a fourth-round consolation match against Sammy Valeo/Tommy King (Timothy Christian) at Palatine.

Prairie Ridge’s Saif Karim and Wolves doubles partners Brad Haisler and Nick Haisler both went 0-2.

Woodstock’s doubles team of Riley Ellegood and Brad Arnold posted an opening-round win over Logan Moeller and Leith Elbzour of Dixon. The Blue Streaks duo then dropped back-to-back matches, including a 7-6 (5), 4-6 (2) decision to Chatham Glenwood’s Joseph Doerfler and Nicholas Doerfler in the second round of the consolation bracket.

Class 2A: Jacobs’ Kyle McNally and Thomas Nelson, 9-16 seeds, both won their first two matches before losing their third-round matches. Their Golden Eagles teammates, the doubles teams of Jed Sia/Justin Brzeski and John Kaiser/Justin Cunningham, both went 2-2 on the day.

McNally defeated Paul Choi (Wheaton-Warrenville South) by default and swept Johnny Mou (Neuqua Valley), 6-2, 6-0, before losing to 5-8 seed Noah Hernandez (Hinsdale Central), 6-4, 6-3. McNally will play Hersey’s Brent Chen in a fourth-round consolation match at Wheeling.

Nelson posted wins over Jackson Kohls (Belvidere North), 6-0, 6-0, and Evan Glebov (Highland Park), 6-1, 6-4. Nelson then dropped a 6-1, 3-6, 6-1 decision to Nikita Filin (New Trier). Nelson next faces Vincent Yin (Naperville Central), also in a fourth-round consolation match at Wheeling.

Sia/Brzeski dropped their first-round match, recovered to win back-to-back matches, and then lost to Nikunj Tyagi/Akshay Baid (Metea Valley), ending the season for the two Golden Eagles. Kaiser/Cunningham opened with a win, lost a match, then won again, before losing in three sets to Dovydas Jasinauskas/Nathan Lee (Naperville North).

Huntley’s doubles team of Andrew Burkey/Thomas Patel recovered from its opening-round loss to post consecutive wins, including a 6-2, 3-6, (9) decision over Giona Maccaferri/Jack Hartung (Maine South). Burkey/Patel then defeated Drew Licari/Sharankumar Kamaraj (Rockford Auburn), 7-5, 6-0, in a third-round consolation match at Hoffman Estates. Burkey/Patel play at 8 a.m. Friday at Fremd.

Huntley’s Saarav Desai and Red Raiders doubles partners Matt Grubbs and Stan Kurtek both went 1-2.

Crystal Lake Central sophomore Logan Wasilk dropped his only two matches.

Marian Central 43, Jacobs 25: At Woodstock, the Hurricanes capped a 16-0 season with the nonconference victory.
