High school sports roundup for Saturday, April 17

Woodstock North’s Mackenzie Salazar was a perfect 4 for 4 in a 12-5 nonconference win over Burlington Central on Saturday.

The Thunder churned out four runs in each of the third, fourth and fifth innings and mashed out 14 hits in the victory.

Casey Vermett picked up the win for Woodstock North, allowing four runs, one earned, in five innings. She allowed two hits and walked eight, while striking out five.

Danielle Durkel was hit with the loss for the Rockets, allowing 12 runs in three innings in the circle.

Libertyville 7-7, McHenry 3-3: At Libertyville, the Warriors suffered a pair of losses in a Saturday doubleheader.

Dundee-Crown 11, Grayslake Central 1: At Grayslake, the Chargers hit the ground in a full sprint, picking up four runs in the first inning and adding at least one more in every frame.

McKayla Anderson went 3 for 4 with a home run, three runs scored and a pair of RBIs to lead D-C in the onslaught, while also notching the win from the circle. She tossed five innings while surrendering only one unearned run on three hits and striking out 12.

Antioch 17, Marengo 3: At Marengo, Antioch made short work of its host, piling up 17 runs in a rout.

Brooke Behrens took the loss, allowing 17 runs, seven of which were earned, over six innings of work.

Sandburg 9, Marengo 6: At Marengo, the home team’s second loss of the day came at the hands of Sandburg, which broke open a back-and-forth contest with a four-run fourth inning.

Lilly Kunzer was a bright spot for Marengo, going 4 for 4 with a double, a run scored and a pair of RBIs. She had less success in the circle, however, taking the loss after allowing seven runs on 12 hits over six and 2/3 innings.

Marengo 7, Belvidere North 5 (5 inn.): At Marengo, Behrens had a double and drove in three runs, and Kunzer had two doubles and one RBI for the Indians in their first win of the season. Savannah Swanson went 2 for 2 with two RBIs, while Mia Lulinski drove in one.

Behrens also picked up the win in the circle, allowing five runs on six hits.

Johnsburg 9-13, Lakes 3-11: At Johnsburg, the Skyhawks swept the nonconference doubleheader against the Eagles to improve to 3-0. Brooke Klosowicz went 3 for 4 with two homers, a double and three RBIs in Game 1, while Avery Malueg was 2 for 3 with two home runs and four RBIs. Addison Mass had two doubles and tossed 11 strikeouts in a complete-game victory.

In Game 2, Kate Linkletter (2 for 3) had two solo home runs, Megan Patterson was 3 for 4 with a double, triple and three RBIs, and Klosowicz had a homer and three RBIs. Emily Wizceb, Mass, Nicole Jihlavec and Hailey Barack each drove in one.

Marist 2-10, Huntley 0-6: At Chicago, the Red Raiders dropped both games of their doubleheader against the RedHawks. Brianna Bower allowed two runs on three hits in Game 1 for Huntley, striking out nine. Opposing pitcher Abby Dunning tossed a one-hitter with 17 strikeouts in the complete-game shutout.

Reese Hunkins went 3 for 4 with a homer, triple, double and five RBIs in Game 2, Marley Reicher went 2 for 4 and Clara Hudgens added a double.

BASEBALL

Richmond-Burton 17, Antioch 1: At Antioch, the Rockets rolled over their hosts to improve to 3-0 on the season. Joseph Mrowiec was 2 for 3 with three RBIs in the win. Hayden Christiansen was 2 for 3 with a two-run homer.

Prairie Ridge 5, Marengo 4: At Crystal Lake, the Wolves capitalized on seven Marengo errors to win in walk-off fashion in the bottom of the seventh. Aidan Preves provided the late heroics for the Wolves with a walk-off single.

Ty Serpien was hit with the loss, giving up three unearned in two innings of relief work, including the walk-off hit.

Guilford 14, Woodstock 4: At Rockford, the Blue Streaks fell behind quickly and never regained their footing in a road loss. Sam Chapman doubled twice in the loss for Woodstock.

Mundelein 3-6, Crystal Lake Central 1-3: At Mundelein, the Tigers suffered losses on both ends of a doubleheader on the road.

Jake Larson had a pair of hits and an RBI for the Tigers in Game 1, and Braydon Gibour doubled and drove in a run in Game 2.

Crystal Lake South 9, Vernon Hills 2: At Vernon Hills, Tommy Walsh allowed one run on two hits over five innings of work while striking out six to lead the Gators to a road victory.

Nathanael Freeze went 1 for 3 with a walk and two RBIs in the win and Ryan Skwarek doubled twice.

Hampshire 4, Conant 3: At Hoffman Estates, the Whip-Purs held off a late-inning push from Conant to pick up a road victory.

Dylan Petrey tossed six scoreless before allowing three earned in the bottom of the seventh, but held on for the complete-game win. He allowed six hits and walked one while striking out 11.

GIRLS SOCCER

Dundee-Crown 1, Sycamore 0: At Sycamore, the Chargers notched their first win of the young season in a road shutout of the Spartans.

Daisy Rivas scored the lone goal of the match in the 77th minute on an assist from Giselle Farias.

Marian Central 3, Romeoville 0: At Schaumburg, the Hurricanes led from wire to wire in a PepsiCo Showdown win over Romeoville.

Kelsi McThenia had one goal and one assist in the victory, Sofia Cazares and Angelina Cutrona each scored once, and Sidney Gerstenkorn set up two assists.

Woodstock North 4, Joliet West 1: At Schaumburg, the Thunder got two goals apiece from Addison Rishling and Kaylee Smith in a PepsiCo Showdown win over the Tigers.

Hannah Fink had nine saves in the win for North.

Woodstock North 12, Trinity 0: At Schaumburg, Woodstock North rolled over Trinity in a PepsiCo Showdown win.

Rishling, Abbi Foster, Kate Ward, Gracie Zankle and Xihomara Escorza split the goals between them in the rout, while Hanna Fink made three saves.

Woodstock 2, Grant 1: At Fox Lake, the Blue Streaks kicked off their season in the win column, thanks to a late goal from Natalie Morrow.

Alisha Virani also scored a goal in the win, and Celia Tafoya assisted on both of the Streaks’ goals.

Highland Park 3, Crystal Lake Central 2: At Schaumburg, Emma Bolanowski had a goal and assist in the loss for the Tigers.

BOYS SOCCER

Richmond-Burton 4, Grant 1: At Richmond, Ethan Demers rattled off three goals for the Rockets to help them end their season at 7-7-2.

Hugo Campos scored one goal and Logan Knott made eight saves in the win.

BOYS TENNIS

Cary-Grove Invite: At Cary, the Trojans swept their way through the invite on Saturday with a trio of 5-0 wins over Hampshire, Woodstock North and Dundee-Crown.

Of the 15 victories, only two required a third set during C-G’s dominant afternoon.

Woodstock North was paced by strong performances by Jason Packard at No. 1 singles and Marco Sotelo at No. 2 singles. The Thunder also received good contributions from Cole Lanci, Noah Kurchina and Jason Burg at doubles.

Jacobs 4, Benet 1: At Algonquin, the Golden Eagles won all three doubles matches in their nonconference win over the Redwings. Thomas Nelson and Justin Brzeski (No. 1 doubles), John Kaiser and Justin Cunningham (No. 2), and Jubin Vettikkatt and Andrew Fulton (No. 3) all won in straight sets.

Kyle McNally added a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles for Jacobs.

COLLEGE SOFTBALL

McHenry County College 14-7, South Suburban 4-5 (DH): At Crystal Lake, the Scots picked up wins in both ends of a home doubleheader.

Morgann Paaske picked up the win in game one and Haley Barnes had the W in game two.

COLLEGE BASEBALL

McHenry County College 4-16, Morton College 1-6:At Crystal Lake, the Scots notched two wins over Morton in doubleheader action.

Ben Belgrave went the distance in the Game 1 victory, allowing one earned on four hits and two walks over seven innings. Jack Hines provided the bulk of the offense with a home run and three RBIs.

In the second game, the Scots put up five runs in the bottom of the first and never looked back on the way to a rout. Hines went 3 for 4 and knocked in five more runs as MCC completed the Saturday sweep.
