An Algonquin student and a McHenry County student are among the 17 scholarship winners in the state’s COVID-19 vaccine lottery, which announced its final recipients Friday.

Bloomington and Rolling Meadows residents each won a $1 million cash prize, according to a news release.

The vaccine lottery was announced by Gov. JB Pritzker’s office as a way to encourage Illinoisans to receive a COVID-19 vaccine. As of Thursday, 53.59% of McHenry County residents and 52.83% of residents statewide were fully vaccinated against COVID-19, according to public health data.

The other recipients of the $150,000 scholarship announced Friday hail from Alton, Aurora, Buffalo Grove, Chicago, suburban Cook County, Douglas County, Franklin County, Hancock County, Joliet, Kendall County and Peoria County. Two scholarship recipients are from Lake County and another two are from Rockford.

The names were drawn Thursday, and winners were notified by the Illinois Department of Public Health by phone or email that day, according to the release. Residents from those cities should keep their phones on and check their email regularly to find out if they won.

The winners will have seven days to securely complete, sign and send the authorization form to the IDPH to accept their prizes. Winners will be announced eight days after the drawing unless they choose to remain anonymous.

This week’s drawing marks the first time a McHenry County resident has been selected.
