Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period: Jan 1-March 31, 2021

One of the most important considerations upon turning 65 isn’t just enrolling in Medicare, but more specifically, it’s about finding the right plan that allows you access to the care that makes the most sense for you.

Original Medicare contains two parts – Parts A and B. But depending on your needs, other choices may be more appropriate. One solution is to enroll in a Medicare Advantage Plan.

If you miss your Initial Enrollment Period, which starts three months prior to your 65th birthday and ends three months after you turn 65, you can sign up for a Medicare Advantage Plan during the Open Enrollment Period, (sometimes called the General Enrollment Period), which runs from January 1 through March 31.

Medicare Advantage Plans are a bundled alternative which includes both Parts A and B of Original Medicare, as well as other options such as prescription drugs. Medicare Advantage Plans, (also known as Part C), are offered by private, Medicare-approved companies, and follow those same official guidelines.

During the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period, you will have a couple important options available to you, such as:

  • Changing to a new Medicare Advantage Plan
  • Changing back to Original Medicare, and join a Medicare Prescription Drug Plan

If you are enrolled in Original Medicare, there are some things you cannot do during the Open Enrollment Period however, such as switching from Original Medicare to a Medicare Advantage Plan, join a Medicare drug plan if you have Original Medicare, or switch from one prescription drug plan to another.

A lot of details exist with every Plan. It may seem complicated, but Senior Watchdog is here to help you through each step of the enrollment process to find the best Plan for your specific needs.
