Interstate 180 bridge in Hennepin will close for the weekend, beginning Friday morning

Detours will direct motorists to Routes 28, 89 and 71

The Interstate 180 Illinois River Bridge (Gudmund Sonny Jessen Bridge) in Hennepin will be closed overnight starting at 7 a.m. Friday, Dec. 10.

The closure is needed to pour concrete on a section of the bridge connecting the eastbound lanes to the westbound lanes and allow it to cure, said the Illinois Department of Transportation in a Wednesday morning press release.

A posted detour will direct motorists to Route 29, Route 89 and Route 71 during the work, which is scheduled to be completed by 8 a.m. Monday, Dec. 13.

This work is part of a project to remove and replace the bridge deck on Interstate 180 over the Illinois River. Work on the bridge deck is expected to last into the winter with bridge painting and pier work expected to last through next summer.

Motorists can expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through this area. To avoid the work area, when feasible, use of alternate routes should be considered. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to changed conditions and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits, refrain from using mobile devices and be alert for workers and equipment.
