Star Union Spirits of Peru wins 8 awards at San Francisco World Spirits Competition

Navy Strength Dark Rum and Reserve Rum earn double gold medal

The 2021 San Francisco World Spirits Competition awarded two double gold medals, one gold medal and five silver medals to Star Union Spirits of Peru in its annual spirits competition.

Since its introduction in 2000, the San Francisco World Spirits Competition has become one of the most respected and influential spirits competitions in the world. The awards are one of the most reliable and universal indications of spirits excellence.

The Star Union Spirits that were honored in the competition are as follows; double gold medal winners: Navy Strength Dark Rum and Reserve Rum. Gold medal winner: Rested Agave. Silver medal winners: Aged Apple Brandy, Single Barrel Cherry Brandy, Single Barrel Immature Brandy, Silver Rum and Single Barrel Gold Rum.

How the spirits were judged: Throughout four days of highly controlled blind tastings, the experienced judging panels taste every product to decide if it is medal-worthy.

Judges do not receive any information on producer or price point, ensuring each spirit is judged fairly, equally, and without bias.

Double gold medals are awarded to the entries that receive a gold medal rating by all members of the judging panel; these are among the finest products in the world.

Gold medals are exceptional spirits that are near the pinnacle of achievement; these products set the standard for their categories.

Silver medals are outstanding spirits that show refinement, finesse, and complexity; these winners are among the best examples of their categories.

Star Union Spirits Double Gold Medal Winners

Navy Strength Dark Rum made from Louisiana First Boiled Sugarcane Molasses (cane juice boiled only once), and then married with charred oak barrels and caramelized molasses, imbuing the spirit with its signature color and rich, deep flavor. An over-proof spirit at 114 proof.

Reserve Rum is made from Louisiana First Boiled Sugarcane Molasses, aged five years in a Whiskey Barrel and one year in a Sherry Cask. Rich, elegant. A limited edition, only 660 bottles available at 107 Proof.

Star Union Spirits Gold Medal Winner

Rested Agave spirit was distilled from Weber Blue Agave nectar sourced from the northern hills of Guadalajara, Mexico. The fermented Agave was distilled in Plainfield in small batches by distiller, Casey Beall. The Rested Agave spirit was allowed to mature for a minimum of 14 months in American charred oak barrels which allows for a high quality and unique flavor in each bottle. Unique, deep, rich and elegant. Only 1,100 bottles.

Single Barrel Immature Brandy, made from Cabernet Sauvignon grapes our brandy is hand crafted from cluster to bottle in our Peru distillery.

The essence of Cabernet permeates the spirit from supple mouth-feel to buttery finish. Versatile enough to dress up a cocktail or be enjoyed neat, shaken or on the rocks. The Single Barrel Immature Brandy has been aged in a Toasted American Oak Barrel to accentuate the velvety highlights while preserving the floral body of the grape.

Single Barrel Cherry Brandy, champions the finest Michigan cherries, Star Union’s Cherry Brandy is 100% Montmorency Cherries grown on the Oxley Farms Estate. Montmorency cherries are part of the lighter-red, Amarelle cultivar of sour cherry that presents in our brandy as gentle on the pallet, yielding to an invigorating edge. Flavor balanced throughout. Aged in Toasted American Oak Barrels which deepens the richness of the cherry core while maintaining the balance of spicy accents and vanilla essence. An exciting mix staple that adds a modern flavor profile to classic cocktails. 82 Proof.

Aged Apple Brandy, aged 14 months in our toasted American oak barrels. Well balanced, with vanilla, caramel and cashew overtones. It’s crisp but smooth Apple essence permeates with toasted American oak barrel notes. Think of an 82 proof caramel apple with chopped cashews.

Silver Rum is made from Louisiana First Boiled Sugarcane Molasses. Our Silver Rum reveals a raw cane nose of caramel and tropical fruit, more common to an Agricole Style Rum.

Single Barrel 2 Year Gold Rum is made from Louisiana First Boiled Sugarcane Molasses and barreled immediately after distillation. Unfiltered. Aged for at least two years in an American charred-oak whiskey barrel gives our rum its natural gold hue, a hint of vanilla, and complex notes of oak and whiskey. Rich, full bodied.

Star Union Spirits was established by winemakers, Jeff Yosowitz and Bob Windy as a small craft distillery in Peru at the historic Westclox building. Star Union Spirits opened its doors to the public in November 2018. Casey Beall joined Star Union Spirits as its distiller and production manager in early 2019, adding experience, depth and insight to its robust portfolio of award-winning spirits.
