Bureau County EMA says landing will be closed for safety until oil is cleaned up

Barto Landing along the Illinois River in Spring Valley is closed until further notice after an unknown person released motor oil Saturday into the water.

The oil traveled into the channel on the Illinois River.

Illinois State Police discovered the spill Saturday morning.

It’s an ongoing hazardous material cleanup, and for the safety of the public, Barto Landing will be closed until further notice — which may encompass the entire weekend — said the Bureau County Emergency Management Agency.

Spring Valley Fire Department requested assistance from Bureau County EMA, Spring Valley Police, Illinois State Police, Illinois Department of Natural Resource, Illinois EPA, MABAS 25 and 39 Hazmat teams, U.S. Coast Guard and Illinois Emergency Management Agency.
