The Reapers busted the game open with seven runs in the final three innings.

“Nothing replaces live game situations, and today we saw that for the first time this season and even though we struck out a lot, I was happy with how we performed against a very good Plano ballclub,” first-year Mendota coach Rob Nunn said. “Our goal in our first contest was to compete in all aspects of the game, and I thought we accomplished that even though we didn’t get the win.”

SOFTBALL

St. Bede 1, Ottawa 0: St. Bede sophomore Ella Hermes, in her very first varsity start, allowed only three hits and struck out 15 without a walk to lead the Bruins to a nonconference victory Monday in Ottawa.

The contest ended in a tough-luck loss for Pirates senior McKenzie Oslanzi, who struck out 12 and allowed five hits and the one run, which was unearned, in the fourth inning.

“We had a plan to rotate our three pitchers, but Ella was dealing from the first pitch to the last pitch,” St. Bede coach Shawn Sons said. “She felt good. We got together and as a staff made the decision to let her keep going and she was a warrior. She was incredible. We took advantage of what they gave us and … we had a strong outfield out there and Addie (Bontz) made the play when we needed it.”

St. Bede got the only run of the game when Bella Pinter reached on a one-out error, went all the way to third base on an infield groundout and scored when Payge Pyszka’s bouncer was misplayed. Oslanzi singled to lead off the home seventh, went to second on a wild pitch then was thrown out trying to score the tying run on a single by Zoe Harris when Bontz made a perfect throw to Pinter.

Maggie Dvais scored on a penalty kick in the first half for the Tigresses.

“We didn’t play really great team soccer,” PHS coach David Gray said. “I mean, there were some moments we moved the ball. But I’d like to see us earn goals by passing. We had some goals that were good individual goals, but we didn’t do a great job of making team goals happen. Even if Mariah is the one who finishes it, I’d like to see more people involved before the goal is scored.

“It’s a nice win. It’s an improvement from Thursday [when PHS lost, 3-0, at Byron], but there’s still some room to grow.”
