Roundup: St. Bede girls golf advances to sectional

Last fall, due to COVID-19 restrictions, the IHSA limited the number of teams advancing to golf sectionals to two rather than the standard three.

That left St. Bede on the outside by one stroke.

The Bruins made up for it this season.

St. Bede carded a 351 to place third at the Class 1A Alleman Regional at Saukie Golf Course in Rock Island to advance as a team to the Geneseo Sectional on Monday.

Rock Falls won with a 323 and Geneseo was second with a 343.

On the bus ride home, the Bruins received a FaceTime call from 2021 St. Bede graduate and golfer Alyssa Heitz to congratulate them.

“I’m really proud of the girls,” St. Bede coach Rich Cummings said. “It’s a fun group. I’m really happy for them. Last year, missing it by one stroke and only taking two teams, it kind of felt like they were gipped a little bit. It stung. Alyssa, our team leader last year, graduated. She called the girls on the bus ride home. It was really fun for them. I heard the squeals from the back of the bus.”

Aleanna Mendoza led the Bruins as she shot a 76 to place third individually behind Rock Falls sophomore Megan Fiorini and Kewanee’s Mya Mirocha.

“Overall I felt really good about it,” Mendoza said. “It got a lot warmer. I was in a good mood the entire round, and I feel that made a positive impact on my round. The course was challenging, but it was nice we started on the back because the back was significantly easier, a lot flatter at least. We didn’t get range time, so that was a warm-up for the front.”

St. Bede’s Gianna Grivetti tied for ninth with an 85, teammate Brianne Briggs tied for 15 with an 89 and Ava Manicki rounded out the Bruins’ scoring with a 101.

“That was a big boost for us,” Cummings said about Manicki’s fourth score. “Her 101, she easily took 10-12 strokes off her average. She came through big for us.”

At Joliet

La Salle-Peru senior Grace Antle shot an 89 on Thursday at Inwood Golf Course to advance out of the Class 2A Joliet Central Regional.

“It makes me really happy because it’s my senior year,” Antle said. “I was really hoping to qualify (for the sectional).

Antle made par on four holes and recorded a birdie on No. 7.

“My drives have never been as good as they were today,” Antle said. “The course was pretty straight so it was easy to hit good drives.

“My chipping was not good. The greens were really hard to read, so for having hard greens, my putts were pretty good.”

Antle will play in the Washington Sectional on Monday.
