The Illinois Valley Pistol Shrimp grabbed the lead in the first inning and led throughout in an 8-4 victory over the Springfield Sliders on Tuesday in Springfield.
The win was Illiniois Valley’s third in a row. The Shrimp beat Clinton 8-3 and the Sliders 14-0 for the other two wins of the streak.
It’s the Shrimp’s second three-game winning streak of the season. Illinois Valley beat Danville, Springfield and Wabash Valley from June 25-30.
On Tuesday, Keyshawn Ogans drew a walk to start the game, advanced to second when Will Worthington walked, stole third, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Andy Nelson to give the Shrimp a 1-0 lead.
Illinois Valley expanded its lead to 4-0 with three runs in the top of the second on RBI singles by Damen Castillo, Benji Ries and Worthington.
After the Sliders cut their deficit to 4-2 in the bottom of the second, the Shrimp scored two more in the third on a two-run double by Ogans.
Nelson ripped an RBI triple and Colton Coca had a sacrifice fly in the seventh as the Shrimp expanded their lead to 8-2.
Nick Laxner earned the win in relief as he pitched 3 2/3 perfect innings with four strikeouts.
Tyler Conkilin started for Illinois Valley, allowing two runs on six hits with four strikeouts and no walks in three innings.
La Salle-Peru graduate Jake Dahl pitched 1/3 an inning, Justin Rios tossed a scoreless inning, and Demian White gave up two runs (one earned) in the ninth.
The Pistol Shrimp (16-29) look to extend their winning streak to four when they travel to Iowa to take on the Burlington Bees (23-23) at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.
