Pistol Shrimp rout Springfield Sliders

The Illinois Valley Pistol Shrimp belted four home runs, recorded 12 hits and had their best offensive output of the season in a 14-0, seven-inning rout of the Springfield Sliders on Saturday at Veterans Park in Peru.

Damen Castillo bashed his eighth homer of the season, while Tom Jurak, Justin Rios and Dom Souto each hit a home run as well.

Castillo opened the second inning with a solo home run.

Jurak followed with a double before Souto and Rios smacked back-to-back home runs to give the Shrimp a 4-0 lead.

Castillo started the third with a single and Jurak followed with a two-run bomb. Will Worthington hit a sacrifice fly later in the inning to score Souto to extend Illinois Valley’s lead to 7-0.

The Shrimp continued the offensive onslaught with three runs in the fifth. Andy Nelson reached on an error and advanced to second on another error on the play. The pair of errors cleared the bases, scoring Keshawn Ogans, Worthington and Sam Link.

Illinois Valley capped the scoring with four more runs in the sixth.

Rios and Colton Coca hit RBI singles in the inning, Nelson drew a bases loaded walk to score Rios and Worthington reached on an error to score Link.

Connor Sullivan earned the win for the Shrimp as he pitched five innings, allowing four hits while striking out five batters and walking one.

Tyler Conklin and Demian White each pitched a scoreless inning for Illinois Valley.

Jaxen Gibson took the loss for the Sliders, who committed seven errors.

The Pistol Shrimp (15-29), who have won two in a row, play the Sliders (19-22) at 6:35 p.m. Tuesday in Springfield.
