Boat explodes near Seneca, 15 injured

Multiple people have been taken to hospitals following a boat explosion near gas pumps Saturday afternoon at Spring Brook Marina in Seneca.

The boat had 17 occupants and 13 of them were taken to local hospitals with non-life threatening injuries, according to the Illinois State Police. An individual from the boat was taken by medical helicopter to an area hospital with serious injuries. A marina employee also was taken to a local hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

Flames and dark black smoke could be seen coming from 623 W. River Dr. The boat was a 25 to 30 foot vessel.

The Illinois State Police, Seneca Police and Illinois Department of Natural Resources Conservation Police responded to the incident, after responding at about 4:25 p.m. Saturday.

The incident is under investigation.
