Streator has two applicants for its City Council vacancy, decision could come by Feb. 19

Appointment will take Tara Bedei’s post, after she was named mayor

Streator Mayor Tara Bedei (left) is sworn-in Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2022, by City Clerk Patricia Henderson (right) in the council chambers of City Hall. Bedei is Streator's first female mayor.

The Streator City Council has accepted two applications for the spot left open when Tara Bedei was sworn in as mayor earlier this month.

The candidates’ names were not released. Bedei, however, said the council has reviewed these applications and will reach out to the candidates with hopes of filling the vacancy by its Feb. 19 meeting. The position can stay open until March 5, which is 60 days after Bedei was sworn in as mayor.

“Our next step is getting interviews scheduled with the candidates and letting them know our expectations,” Bedei said.

Bedei was sworn in as mayor on Jan. 4, five days after former Mayor Jimmie Lansford resigned. Lansford died on Jan. 15 at age 82.
