Streator firefighters extinguished a stove fire Tuesday at a two-story apartment building on South Illinois Street before it spread to other parts of the kitchen.
The Streator Fire Department was called at about 3:25 p.m. after workers in the area saw smoke from the building at 408 S. Illinois St.
Upon arrival, firefighters found smoke coming from one side of the two-story apartment building. The four Streator firefighters on duty extinguished the fire. There were no injuries. Crews were at the scene for less than 40 minutes as they ventilated the smoke from the home.
The fire was caused by careless cooking, according to the Streator Fire Department’s investigation. The resident of the apartment started cooking and left the apartment. There was minor damage to the stove and minor smoke damage to the home.
The Streator Fire Department was assisted by Vermilion Valley Dispatch, the Streator Police Department, Advanced Medical Transport and Illinois American Water.
