A 57-year-old Peru woman died from injuries sustained in a March 26 crash in rural La Salle. A Peru man has been charged with DUI for his role in the now-fatal crash.

Shirley M. Stadler had been taken to OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria following the single-vehicle rollover crash on North 33rd Road, just west of Interstate 39 near La Salle. The Peoria County Coroner’s Office said Stadler died April 12.

The driver of the vehicle is facing charges in La Salle County Circuit Court. Daniel Stalker, 44, of Peru is charged with DUI, driving while revoked, operating an uninsured motor vehicle, failure to use safety, improper lane usage and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident following the crash. He will appear April 28.

The La Salle County State’s Attorney’s Office said Thursday they were alerted to Stadler’s passing but said they can’t comment on the pending case.

Authorities had previously stated further charges may be pending. The crash is under investigation by the Illinois State Police District 17 and La Salle County Sheriff’s Office.

Impaired driving that results in serious injury or death typically is charged as aggravated DUI, a Class 2 felony carrying 3-14 years in prison. However, such cases require toxicology results and/or accident reconstructions, which can be weeks or months in the making.
