The Marquette girls basketball team jumped to an 18-4 first-quarter lead and then used a key 11-2 run in the third quarter to capture a second-consecutive championship of the Tri-County Conference Tournament at Roanoke with a 48-30 triumph over Peoria Christian. The Lady Crusaders were led by all-tournament selections Jessica Jessen [14 points] and Cordy Murphy [11 points, 13 rebounds].

The second-seeded Newark girls basketball squad pushed to a 31-17 halftime lead in a 54-28 victory over No. 3 Serena in the semifinals of the Little Ten Conference Tournament at Shabbona. The Lady Norsemen were led by 17 points and nine rebounds from Katie Larson, eight points and six assists from Miranda Schmidt, and eight points and three rebounds from Taylor Rehberg. The Lady Huskers were paced by Karly Huss [11 points] and Jeri Brennan [five points, five rebounds].

The Ottawa boys swimming team picked up a 50-44 victory over visiting Morris with a win by the 400-meter freestyle relay team [Trevor Buhr, John Schiffgens, Adam Hines, Stephen Truchon, 3:46.84] wrapping things up. The Pirates received individual triumphs from Truchon [200 freestyle – 1:58.54 and 100 butterfly - :58.01], Hines [160 IM – 1:44.24 and 500 freestyle – 5:19.17], and Matt Jacobs [100 freestyle - :56.87 and 100 breaststroke – 1:13.63], while the 160 medley relay team of Hines, Jacobs, Truchon, and Schiffgens also placed first.

The Seneca girls hoops club ran to a 21-5 opening-quarter lead in a 47-24 victory over Sandwich in the third-place game of the Interstate Eight Conference Tournament at Braidwood. The Lady Irish were paced by Coley Baker’s 15 points, 11 rebounds, and three blocked shots, while teammate Ashley Terry added nine points. The Lady Indians’ Emma Darby posted 12 points and nine rebounds.

The Marquette girls hoops squad defeated host Princeton, 58-27. Stefanie Kaufmann led the Lady Cru with a 16-point, 11-rebound double-double, while Terri Graham added 12 points and nine rebounds, and Mary Rothrock nine points.

The Flanagan girls basketball club captured the consolation title of the McLean County Tournament with a 43-37 win over Lexington. The Lady Falcons were paced by Lisa Moreau’s 15 points and eight rebounds, with Beth Maticic posting 10 points, and Laura Friese seven points and five assists.

The Woodland boys hoops team used a 25-14 fourth-quarter advantage to defeat host Wenona, 66-62. The Warriors were led by Randy Delheimer [18 points], Mark Brown [14 points, six rebounds], and Mel McMeen [13 points, 10 rebounds].

The top-seeded Serena boys basketball squad led Leland 31-17 at halftime on the way to a 64-37 win in the quarterfinals of the LTC Tournament at Somonauk. The Huskers were paced by Greg Kosobud’s 17 points while Rich Rosengren and Huston Bailey each recorded 12 points. The Panthers’ Darren Agler led his team with 18 points.

Also at the LTC Tourney, Newark used a 34-21 margin in the second and third periods to top Somonauk, 64-52. Mike Shields netted a game-best 23 points for the Norsemen with Brian Schluntz and Brian Johnson scoring 14 points apiece. The Bobcats were led by 16 points from Scott McRill and 10 points from Perry Yoeckel.
