Earlville-Leland, Newark girls hoops both score first-round wins at 2006 Little Ten Conference Tournament

The top-seeded Earlville-Leland girls basketball rolled past No. 8-seeded Paw Paw 52-16 in the opening round of the Little Ten Conference Tournament at Hinckley. The Lady Red Raiders were led by Chelsea Martin’s 14-point, 12-rebound double-double while teammate Lindsay Norton added 11 points. The Lady Bulldogs were paced by six points and 12 rebounds from Jessica Lilja.

Also at the LTC Tourney, No. 4-seeded Newark advanced past No. 5-seeded Serena 45-38. The Lady Norsemen were led by Ali Hoskins’ 12 points and eight rebounds, with Lindsay Cihak, Kate Anderson, and Emily Holman netting seven points each. The Lady Huskers were paced by 12 points each from Emily Zemanek and Kelcey Thorson.

The Marquette girls hoops squad ran past Peoria Christian, 62-39 in the semifinals of the Tri-County Conference Tournament. Meaghan Nesti led the Lady Crusaders with 19 points, Alex Ratajczak posted 16 points, eight rebounds, and three steals, Jaci Miller registered 11 points, six rebounds, three assists, and five steals and Jordie Bongartz added eight points and nine rebounds.

The Seneca girls basketball club defeated Sandwich 61-40 in an Interstate Eight Conference matchup. The Lady Irish were led by Abbey Musser [19 points], Jalea Berg [13 points] and Bryanne Baker [11 points]. The Lady Indians received 12 points from Jennifer Robinson and 10 points from Crystal Aeppli.

The Streator boys basketball team led 38-23 at halftime then outscored visiting Rock Falls 55-25 [hitting 21-of-29 from the field] in the second half to roll to a 93-48 North Central Illinois Conference victory. Dale Goerne led all 13 Bulldogs that scored in the contest with 22 points while also grabbing 12 rebounds, with Mike Martin adding 13 points and Tom Eplin chipping in 12 points.

The Serena boys hoops squad burst to a 10-0 lead and eventually topped LTC foe Waterman, 53-47. Dean Britt led the balanced scoring Huskers with 10 points followed by Junior Keigley’s eight points and seven points apiece from Mike Crackel and Len Nitiss.

The Newark boys basketball club defeated Shabbona 70-53. The Norsemen were led by Gary Peterson [17 points], Rick Clausel [16 points], Mike Malone [12 points], Tracy Clausel [12 points] and Tim Hackerson [10 points].

The Somonauk boys hoops squad edged Leland 53-48. Jeff Grandgeorge led the Bobcats with 17 points with teammate Tim Meyer adding 12 points. The Panthers received 16 points from Ty Gunderson and 10 points from Mike Twait.

January 16, 1951

The Streator boys hoops team defeated St. Bede 55-52 in overtime. The Bulldogs’ Larry Conner finished with 20 points — including a 23-foot jumper at the regulation buzzer — while Bob Cipalo scored nine points.
