One of the best parts of meeting people from a bigger city is hearing them rave about some burger joint, just to act smug and tell them about a small place near home that’s better for half the price.
I’m blessed to live in the Illinois Valley, where it seems like every grain bin town has one such place. The Kangley Inn is yet another incredible tavern with great food for a reasonable price.
I was able to feed three adults more food than was probably necessary for $41. That dollar amount got us an order of onion rings, an order of deep-fried mushrooms, a ribeye sandwich with fries, a Beaver Burger, and two large pieces of fried chicken with spaghetti and a salad.
The Beaver Burger is a burger topped with bacon, cheese, caramelized onions, green peppers and mushrooms, which were all a much-needed addition because God knows I wasn’t about to order a vegetable as a side. The veggies added a sweetness to the burger that balanced out well with the bacon. Burger lovers should be on the lookout for this one.
The fried chicken, the bar restaurant’s Thursday night special, came in a large portion with an additionally large portion of spaghetti that left my cohort both wanting more and thinking he ate way too much.
The ribeye sandwich was a humorous experience, because typically when somebody orders one, it comes as a reasonably-sized piece of meat in between bread. The Kangley Inn just cooked up a full-sized ribeye that was of the same quality as if we’d have just ordered a traditional ribeye steak.
I can’t recommend the Kangley Inn enough for the quality of food they provide, especially at that price. The same meal if we traveled an hour south or a couple hours north would have cost about 25% more, and I highly doubt the food would have been nearly as good.
