Things settled down after a wild opening inning which saw 11 combined runs plated, but when the dust settled, the host Seneca Fighting Irish baseball club pulled away from the visiting Serena Huskers, 12-7, in non-conference action Wednesday.
Cole Hintze with two singles and three runs batted in, Tyler Sulzberger with a single and a double, and Aldridge, Ethan Brockman, Cole Underhill and Matt Cruise with one RBI apiece led the Irish attack, with Aldridge (3 IP, 0 R, 0 K) earning the win in relief.
Hudson Stafford (1 2/3 IP, 3 ER, 1 K) suffered the pitching loss in relief of starter Dylan Cartwright (4 1/3 IP, 2 ER, 3 K). Cartwright helped himself with a double, while Todd Smith, Camden Figgins, Bryce Shannon and Hunter Linder drove home runs for Serena.
Seneca 10, Serena 1: At Seneca, the host Fighting Irish won their 11th in a row to improve to 11-2 with the “W” over the Huskers, who fell to 8-5.
Maggie Carpenter (7 IP, 1 ER, 5 K) pitched the win for Seneca, helping her own cause with two hits and three runs scored. Maddy Klicker added a 4-for-4 day with a triple, three runs scored and two RBIs.
Katie Baker singled twice, tripled and scored the lone run for Serena. Makayla McNally added a double, Emma Holdiman provided the run batted in, and Taylor Staton (6 IP, 6 ER, 6 K) was dealt the loss.
La Salle-Peru 9, Sandwich 0: At Sandwich, the host Indians managed only two hits – both off the bat of Breanna Sexton – in the I-8 loss.
Maggie Knepper (2 IP, 6 R) was the pitcher of decision for Sandwich (1-7).
Girls track and field
Rochelle 70, Sandwich 68, Serena 17: On Tuesday, Sandwich’s Alana Stahl (2:45.96 in the 800; 6:16.59 in 1600), Claire Roberts (:57.99 in 300 hurdles; 4.41 meters in long jump; 9.57 in triple jump), the 1600 (4:49.43) and 1600 (3:49.74) relay teams and Claire Allen (11.05 in shot put; 36.42 in discus) scored first-place finishes.
For Serena, Jaiden Mahler (1:13.60 in 400) claimed a first.
Plainfield North 57, Sandwich 23: On Tuesday, the Indians fell despite wins from Kadin Kern at 120 pounds (forfeit), Evan Reilly at 126 (forfeit), Aidan Linden at 152 (17-2 tech. fall) and Seven Tornga at 170 (pinfall).
Streator 13, Marquette 3: For the Crusaders, both Ethan Price and losing pitcher Carson Zellers (2 K) singled and scored.
Marquette 2, Streator 1: For the Bullpups, Emma Augustine (7 IP, 15 K) took the hard-luck loss as Streator stranded a baker’s dozen on the basepaths.
