RURAL VARNA — A day after falling a game below the break-even point, the Marquette Academy girls basketball team rectified that situation emphatically Thursday evening with a dominating 56-37, Tri-County Conference triumph over host Midland.
Marquette [4-4] was paced by Josie Eager’s 16 points and four steals, Izzy Garkey’s 15 points and seven rebounds, Eva McCallum’s 12 points and eight rebounds, and Lilly Craig’s eight-point, 12-rebound, five-steal performance.
Somomauk 43, Indian Creek 35: At Somonauk the host Lady Bobcats [5-4, 3-1] earned the Little Ten triumph, led by Maggie Roberts’ 28-point, eight rebound night.
“Good game and win against a good and very difficult team,” said Somonauk coach Garland King, whose Lady ‘Cats were also paced by Ashley Eaton [six points, 14 rebounds, five assists] and Josie Rader [eight points].
Fieldcrest 55, Lexington 43: At Lexington, the visiting Lady Knights [9-1, 8-1] led by 10 at the half and maintained the advantage for the Heart of Illinois “W.”
Haley Carver with 14 points, Ashlyn May with 13 points, five assists, five steals and five rebounds, Kaitlin White with seven points and Riley Burton with seven as well spearheaded the Fieldcrest attack.
Boys bowling
Ottawa 3,477, Sycamore 3,430: At Dettore’s Town Lanes, the host Pirates won again led by high roller Zander Parise’s impressive 717 series [241, 251, 225 games] and Nelson Brandt’s 634 [246].
Boys swimming
Sterling 102, Cavalier Co-Op 68: At Sterling on Wednesday, Joe Ovanic claimed the 200-yeard freestyle in 1:52.01 and the 100 butterfly in 54.16 seconds for the visitors’ lone event wins.
Sophomore/JV girls basketball
Herscher 38, Streator 32: At Pops Dale Gymnasium, the host Lady Bulldogs stayed close throughout but couldn’t catch Herscher despite 11 points from Emma Augustine and seven courtesy of Bridget McGurk.
Marquette 44, Midland 36: At rural Varna, the visitors rolled led by Jaylyn Clairmont [14 points], Kaylee Killelea [14 points] and Lindsey Kaufman [11 points].
