3 Things Your Plumber Wants You to Consider During the Holiday Season

During the busy holiday season, most people aren’t thinking about how they can avoid plumbing disasters in their home. Many are focused on shopping, travel plans, hosting duties, and fun ways to enjoy this special time of year. However, accidents do happen, many times when we least expect it or when it’s most inconvenient. Here are 3 things your plumber wants you to consider during the holiday season:

1. If you’re planning to travel away from home for more than one or two nights, make sure you shut off your home’s main water valve. “If the heat in your home goes out and you aren’t there, you could end up coming home to a basement full of water,” explained Mike Krejci, a professional plumber with Jay’s Plumbing in Downers Grove. “The water in your pipes could freeze and cause a pipe to break, allowing water to enter the home.”

2. By this time of year, hoses should be disconnected from outside water spigots. Some homes allow the spigots to be shut off from inside the house. Older style spigots should be covered to keep them from freezing and causing water to back up inside the home.

3. If you do a lot of cooking, don’t use your garbage disposal as a garbage can. “Avoid putting coffee grounds, stuffing, oatmeal, pasta, and other foods that expand when they’re wet down the disposal,” said Krejci. “Run a lot of water when running the disposal and for a short time afterwards to help keep the pipe clear and avoid clogs from forming.”

The holiday season is a great time of year to have preliminary maintenance performed on your main water line and your kitchen drain line, ensuring their normal operation when you need it most. For more information on these and other plumbing services, please contact:
