Three things to know about Pilates

Pilates can make a difference in your health by offering a low impact but challenging workout.

Here are 3 things to know about Pilates:

1. Pilates offers safe rehabilitation.

Pilates uses resistance and assistance with spring and pulley systems on the apparatus, which provides support for proper alignment. Pilates also builds core strength and flexibility, which extends from your center out to the extremities (arms and legs) without straining or stressing the joints.

Many injuries are caused by muscle imbalances. Pilates exercises promote an even muscle system throughout the body by strengthening the core. The core is considered the center of the body. Pilates also stresses spinal and pelvic alignment, which is critical in getting us to move the way we’re supposed to move to avoid injury.

2. Pilates helps prevent injuries.

“The stronger we are from our core, or our center, the stronger we will be into our trunk and extremities. It’s called proximal stability for distal mobility,” said Mary Lou Savino Owner and President of Bet Fit Physical Therapy and Pilates, Ltd. in Downers Grove.

“This basically means that in order to have proper function and mobility of distal structures, like our arms and legs, we first have to have stability at our proximal structures, which is our core and mid-line structures (head and trunk),” Savino continued.

3. Pilates provides improved body awareness.

Improved body awareness leads to functional movement patterns during our daily lives. According to Savino, people who do Pilates, either for exercise or as a part of their rehab, learn to better feel and understand where their bodies are in space and how they move. It teaches them proper movement patterns instead of compensatory patterns and substitutions, which is what leads to pain and injury in the first place!
