As of this spring, the Diocese of Joliet and the Catholic Education Foundation have officially partnered with FreeWill to provide accessible estate planning resources to our Diocesean community.
FreeWill, a social venture featured in Forbes, The New York Times, and Oprah’s 31 Best Ways to Make a Difference, has empowered more than 300,000 Americans to plan for their futures and protect the things they love by removing the expensive legal fees often associated with the process.
“The Foundation is excited to offer this tool to our benefactors to assist them with their estate planning and legacy wishes,” Jennifer Georgis, executive director of the Catholic Education Foundation, said.
Catholics are called to be stewards — of their faith, their loved ones, and the things in their lives in which God has blessed us.
There are more than 2,300 verses that deal with stewardship, generosity, and financial management in the Bible. In fact, the Bible talks more about generosity and money than any other topic, with the exception of love. Creating a will, creating a legacy is a great act of love—but it’s a task that often gets pushed aside because it can be confusing or complicated. It’s reported that nearly 70% of American adults (including half of adults over the age of 55) don’t have an up-to-date will.
This partnership with FreeWill allows Diocese of Joliet parishioners to write a legal will at no personal cost, in 20 minutes or less, and creates access to other important estate planning documents, such as planning non-probate beneficiaries. It can also be used in tandem with the parishioner’s attorney of choice. Moreover, this partnership allows parishioners to create lasting legacies with their parish, Catholic school, or faith formation programs.
Planned giving is advantageous for both the donor and the Diocese: for the donor, it is a gift that assures peace of mind, generally costs nothing today, and can come with great tax benefits, while for the Diocese it ensures God’s mission can be strengthened for years to come.
The community is invited to learn more and get started on protecting what God has blessed them with. Visit freewill.com/dioceseofjoliet to write a will at no personal costs. Any questions about the partnership can be directed to Jennifer Georgis at firstname.lastname@example.org.
