Celebrating Mother's Day Without Mom

Holidays can be somber occasions for those who have lost a dear loved one. If your beloved mother is no longer with you, the thought of celebrating Mother’s Day may bring sadness and an intense reminder of her absence.

“Losing a parent is never easy, no matter how long or how great their life was,” explained John Adolf, Director of Adolf Funeral Services. “When talking with families about it, especially after a recent loss, I try to emphasize that your loved one is always in your heart, and no one can ever take that away from you.”

According to Adolf, celebrating a holiday like Mother’s Day will never be the same without your mom. “Although it won’t be the same, it doesn’t have to be melancholy or joyless,” he said. “There were many happy times in your life that you got to spend with her, and that is a wonderful reason to remember, celebrate, and honor your mother’s life. If you’re lucky enough to be together with family on that day, share your favorite stories about your mom and follow through with a tradition your mother would have enjoyed.”

Going out for brunch, watching home movies or videos of your mom, or even staying home and preparing her favorite foods and listening to music she loved are great ways to keep your mom’s memory alive.

“Another way to help ease the pain of loss on Mother’s Day is to remember the importance of the sense of touch,” added Adolf. “When you close your eyes and think about your mom, you will remember the touch of her hand, a warm hug, or a soft loving kiss from her. Those things can never be replaced and hopefully they will help you find comfort on that special day.”
