3 Things Your Plumber Wants You to Know

It’s always handy to have a plumber you can trust when a pipe bursts or a toilet is leaking. Plumbers are happy to make repairs to your home’s plumbing in a pinch, and are also indispensable for installing new plumbing fixtures during a renovation. However, certain types of problems that can cause headaches for a homeowner are easily preventable, and your plumber’s number one goal is to save you as much stress as possible when it comes to your plumbing! Here are 3 things your plumber wants you to be aware of so your home’s plumbing continues to run smoothly:

1. Be careful about storing cleaning supplies under your sinks. A little known fact is that drain taps are often screwed on in a certain way so they are easy to remove and reattach for maintenance and repair purposes. By putting supplies you need to access regularly next to the pipes under your sinks, you could inadvertently be bumping and loosening your drain taps, which could lead to leaks without you realizing it.

2. Be careful what you put in your garbage disposal. Certain types of foods that are very dense or fibrous (oatmeal, coffee grounds, pasta, eggshells, and tea leaves, for example) can clog up your pipes in no time. When you do use your garbage disposal, try to use it sparingly and use plenty of water to wash the scraps down.

3. Be careful when it comes to ambitious DIY installations and repairs. Being knowledgeable and handy around the house can definitely save time and money when it comes to simple problems; however, it’s that one ambitious project that, if performed incorrectly, can end up costing even more to repair in the long run. Know when to call your plumber so that you can be sure your plumbing issue is resolved correctly and efficiently the first time.
