Veterans Day Holiday Honors Veterans for Their Service and Sacrifice

Veterans Day, a very important federal holiday, is celebrated each year on November 11th.   This national day of remembrance honors all the men and women, living or deceased, who have served our country honorably during times of war and times of peace.

Originally called Armistice Day, this special holiday was established to commemorate the end of World War I.   While the official end of WWI was attributed to the signing of the Treaty of Versailles on June 28, 1919, the fighting actually ended seven months prior when the Allies and Germany created the armistice on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month.   November 11, 1918 was considered the end of the “war to end all wars”, and was named Armistice Day.   The name was changed to Veterans Day after World War II and the Korean War took place, to honor American veterans of all wars.   The most important purpose of Veterans Day is to honor America’s veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve their country and make a personal sacrifice for the common good.

“Veterans Day provides us with an opportunity to recognize those who served our country in war and peace,” said John Adolf, Director of Adolf Funeral Services.   “Everyone should take the time to visit a veterans hospital, a national cemetery, or a veterans memorial, which will truly leave visitors with a lasting and visual impact of the sacrifices made on our behalf.   We are fortunate to have the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood, Illinois, which provides our local veterans with a dignified and sacred final resting place.   Adolf Funeral Home provides every veteran we serve with a solid hardwood flag case as a token of appreciation for their service.”
