LA GRANGE – The Parent Community Network has joined forces with the Glenbard Parenting Series. The Lyons Township High School community is invited to connect with other high school parents and students for the Glenbard Parent Series, a news release stated.
Workshops are designed to engage top experts, parents and school staff to become proactive and informed in pursuit of the mutual goal of strengthening local communities. Programs are free and open to the public. Below is the lineup of October speakers appearing via Zoom.
• 7 p.m. Oct. 12
Marc Brackett presents, “Permission to Feel: Unlocking the Power of Emotions to Help Our Kids, Ourselves and Our Society Thrive.” The founder and director of the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence will discuss a set of skills designed to help people use emotions wisely, so they can flourish, achieve desired goals and be their best selves, according to the release. Laurie Santos presents “What Makes Humans Happy: Strategies for Finding Joy Today – The Science of Happiness.” Providing the secret to happier and more motivated students is the mission of Santos, a Yale University professor who created “The Science of Happiness: Psychology and the Good Life.” Participants will discover relevant, simple best practices to improve mental well-being and learn how to live happier, more fulfilling lives. Ana Homayoun presents “That Crumpled Paper Was Due Last Week: Helping Distracted Students Organize/Integrate Their Online & Real Life Worlds.” As students adapt to changing school systems, it becomes increasingly important to help them integrate and organize their real life and digital worlds. To help set up youth to be socially, emotionally and academically successful, the author will offer strategies on how to support students in building executive functioning skills and gaining perspective on the latest trends in the world of social media. In a Spanish-language-only program, three experts present “Preparing the Path for High School and College Success: The College Application Process.” They are school counselors Lissete Ochoa and Lizette Ramirez and Illinois Student Assistance representative Elizabeth Barrera. The webinar will provide information about college admission from start to finish, financial aid, scholarships, the role of testing and other issues.
