Teen allegedly involved in Addison carjacking to remain in custody

15-year-old charged with aggravated vehicular hijacking, armed robbery

A second Chicago teen charged with hijacking a woman’s car at gunpoint from an Addison Popeye’s restaurant parking lot will remain in custody until at least his next court appearance, a DuPage County Judge ruled Monday.

The juvenile, who is 15 years old, is charged with one count of aggravated vehicular hijacking and one count of armed robbery, according to DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office news release.

On Jan. 23, at about 10:46 p.m., Addison police responded to a report of a vehicular hijacking near the Popeye’s restaurant in Addison. Upon their arrival, officers learned that the victim, a 20-year-old female, was walking through the restaurant’s parking lot when she was approached by three individuals, two of whom were armed, the release stated.

One of the individuals, who was later identified as the juvenile, allegedly threatened her to give up her belongings, such as cash, cellular telephone and her car keys, to them or they would kill her, according to the release.

After the victim turned over her belongings to the defendants, all three individuals allegedly got into her car and fled at a high rate of speed. As the defendants fled, a nearby patrol officer began pursuit, and with assistance from the Illinois State Police and its helicopter, were able to track the vehicle to the south side of Chicago, the release stated.

When officers approached the vehicle, the individuals fled the scene on foot. One of the suspects was arrested by assisting Chicago police officers while the other two suspects avoided arrest.

On Jan. 31, Addison police, with assistance from the Chicago Police Department, took the second juvenile into custody while executing a search warrant at the juvenile’s home.

“I would like to thank the Chicago Police Department for their assistance on this case, which ultimately led to the apprehension of the second suspect,” DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said in a statement. “The cooperative efforts exhibited by not only the Chicago Police Department but the Illinois State Police and the Addison Police Department sends the message that in DuPage County we will work with our law enforcement partners throughout Illinois to bring to justice anyone accused of violent crime, such as alleged in this case.”

“The charges filed today against this individual are the direct result of our officers receiving a tremendous amount of support and assistance from the Chicago Police Department,” Addison Director of Police Bill Hayden said in a statement.”Violent crimes are an affront to our entire criminal justice system and at times require cooperative efforts between agencies to bring the alleged offenders to justice, as we saw in this case. I thank the Chicago Police Department, the Illinois State Police and the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office for all their efforts on this case.”

The juvenile’s next court appearance is scheduled for Feb. 17 for status. An investigation into this matter continues. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Addison Police Department at 630-693-7941.
