How Heritage Woods of Minooka is keeping its residents safe during COVID-19 pandemic

COVID-19 continues to be reported in communities across Illinois as vaccines are administered in Phase 1.

There is no federal or state mandate to receive the COVID-19 vaccine. The CDC recommends the vaccine to all Americans 16 and over.

Vaccine administration is currently in Phase 1A and 1B, which includes persons aged 65 years and older.

Residents in retirement communities are considered to be at higher risk of severe COVID-19 outcomes because of older age and because they may have underlying health conditions, such as chronic heart disease, diabetes, or lung disease. The risk for severe illness with COVID-19 increases with age, with older adults at highest risk.

The Centers for Disease Control has issued guidance specific to retirement and independent living communities can help the residents, and those who help serve them, slow the spread of the virus and prevent serious illness.

Deb Denham, VP of Quality and Risk Management at Gardant Management Solutions, shared COVID vaccination education with the Heritage Woods in January. Denham stated that fighting the pandemic requires using all tools available, including vaccination. The vaccine works with your immune system so your body will fight the virus if you are exposed.

Heritage Woods of Yorkville is adapting to today’s environment to keep its residents safe and continues to take special precautions against the spread. Heritage Woods practices safe social distancing activities and encourages its residents to take personal protective measures.

The CDC also offers these recommendations to for residents of retirement communities to protect themselves and others:

  • Wear a mask and wash your hands after touching surfaces in public places
  • Establish a “buddy” system to ensure you stay connected
  • Ensure continued regular care and medical services
  • Have medication and supplies on hand, as well as an adequate supply of food and everyday essentials
  • Keep your room clean and disinfected
  • Learn and practice alternative ways to interact with family and friends, including video or telephone calls
