3 Things to Know When Selecting Kitchen Cabinetry

If you’re planning to renovate or “revive” your kitchen, updating the cabinetry is a terrific option but it’s easy to get overwhelmed with all the factors involved. According to Steve Meyer, owner of Steve’s Flooring & Design, there are 3 main things to know when selecting kitchen cabinetry:

1. The two most popular options for the cabinet finish are stain or paint. “Stained finishes can be affected by the type of wood used to construct the cabinets,” explained Meyer. “Some woods take stain darker than others, and patterns in the grain can be more subtle, like with Maple or Cherry, or more busy like with Oak or Hickory. Maple, a smooth wood, is often used for painted finishes. Hickory is the most dramatic and has the most variation from light to dark. Cherry, the most expensive of cabinet woods, offers the richest look. Painted finishes are also popular, with a wide variety of colors available with or without accent glazes.”

2. Consider how the cabinet is constructed. Cabinet sides are made from plywood or furniture board, a dense type of particle board. Base cabinet drawers are made from plywood, furniture board, or solid wood. “Better drawers are solid wood with dovetailed joints,” said Meyer. “Better cabinets come with concealed self-closing hinges and soft-closing drawers and doors, which keep them from banging shut. These options extend the life of your cabinets by reducing wear on the drawer guides and fronts.”

3. There’s a difference in the overlay of cabinet doors. Traditional overlay exposes more of the face frame of the cabinet. Full overlay doors and drawer fronts are larger and only expose 1/4″ of the face frame all around the door and front.
