5 Things To Consider When Planning a Bathroom Remodel

One great way to add value to your home while creating a beautiful and functional personal space is to remodel your bathroom. Not only will your current needs and desires be addressed, you can create a pleasing aesthetic that compliments the rest of your home. It’s important to have a good plan, a budget, and design assistance from experts in the field before beginning your project. Here are 5 things to consider when planning a bathroom remodel:

1. Plan for adequate storage. Many homes don’t have separate linen closets and medicine cabinets in bathrooms. Make sure your new design allows you to store linens, medications, toiletries, cleaning supplies, and other bathroom items.

2. Tailor the bathroom’s features to meet your current and future needs. “We offer options for bathroom vanities that allow homeowners to upgrade to taller “back-saver” heights,” explained Steve Meyer, owner of Steve’s Flooring & Design. “Grab bars and hand grips should be installed to help if you lose your balance or you’re recovering from surgery. They can double as towel bars. Don’t wait until you need these items to incorporate them into your design. When remodeling we can add blocking inside the wall to support these features.”

3. Most people choose to upgrade the toilet to a comfort-height bowl for convenience. An elongated bowl design is also a nice feature. If possible, position the toilet so it’s not the first thing you see when you open the bathroom door. Try to locate the toilet in a more private space.

4. Decide whether to keep an existing bathtub or convert it to a large shower. “If space is limited, some homeowners prefer to have a beautiful and accessible walk-in shower,” added Meyer. “However, you should also consider resale options when deciding on a tub versus a shower, especially for families with small children. If the existing tub is the only one in the house, it may be better to keep it and install a shower head or hand-held shower in the tub area.”

5. Plan for adequate ventilation to prevent growth of mold and mildew. An exhaust fan can also have a light, a night light, and a heater. Ductwork from the bathroom should vent outside the home, not just into an attic. Be sure to have adequate lighting for each area of the bathroom.
