Deadline extended for families affected by battery fire to apply for help

May now apply through Aug. 1

Smoke billows from the fire at 919 E. Benton St. in Morris. The building contains more than 100,000 pounds of lithium batteries and the east side of Morris has been evacuated.

MORRIS – Families with homes in the lithium battery fire evacuation zone, plus those who lost days of work because their company in the evacuation zone had to close down that week, are invited to apply for financial assistance.

The deadline has been extended to midnight Sunday, Aug. 1.

How it works: Kendall/Grundy Community Action is reviewing each application. Applicants with an income below the 200% poverty level are receiving services right away from the various grants that KGCA administers.

Evacuation families with an income above the 200% poverty level will receive gift cards for gas, groceries, etc.

Workers who live outside the evacuation zone but work at a site within the evacuation zone that shut down that week will receive assistance, too.

For those who have applied but haven’t heard from KGCA, it may be because KGCA does not have their phone number. Such applicants should call KGCA at 815-941-3262 to confirm.

Only families who applied will receive gift cards Aug. 11 at Morris City Hall.

The online application is at 815941help.com.
