Y program helps cancer survivors achieve goals

Cancer is a life-changing disease that takes a tremendous toll on a person, both physically and emotionally.

The Y and Livestrong have joined forces to create Livestrong at the YMCA, a research-based physical activity and well-being initiative designed to help adult cancer survivors achieve their holistic health goals.

Participants work with Y staff trained in supportive cancer care to safely achieve their goals. These include building muscle mass and strength; increasing flexibility and endurance; and improving confidence and self-esteem. By focusing on the whole person and not the disease, Livestrong at the YMCA is helping people move beyond cancer in spirit, mind and body.

Program details:

• 12-week program with two 75-minute sessions per week

• Includes cardiovascular conditioning, strength training, balance and flexibility exercises

• Evaluation includes fitness and quality of life assessments before and after participation

• Facilitated by YMCA-certified instructors

• Requires referral and medical clearance from a physician

• During the 12 weeks, participants will receive a membership, paid by the YMCA. The program is 100% subsidized. There is no cost to anyone who participates.

The next class will be held from 1:30 to 2:45 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays Aug. 31 through Nov. 18.
