Schneider invites students to participate in 2021 Congressional Art Competition

Online submissions from area high school students due April 16

WASHINGTON – Congressman Brad Schneider, D-Deerfield, encourages 10th District students to participate in the Congressional Art Competition, which is taking place virtually this year because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The theme for this year’s contest is “Unity.”

Area high school students are invited to submit a piece of art they have created in the past year, which will be judged by a panel of local educators and artists. Students are encouraged to interpret the theme creatively and submit artwork that reflects their personal interpretation.

Submissions can be entered online. Students should upload high-resolution, well-lit photos of their projects.

The deadline to submit artwork for the competition is 5 p.m. April 16.

“The Congressional Art Competition decorates the halls of Congress each year with representation from every corner of the United States,” Schneider said in a news release. “This year, more than ever, students’ works will serve to cleanse our workplace and our politics. I’m looking forward to reviewing the many remarkable entries interpreting this year’s theme ‘Unity.’ ”

Because of COVID-19 school closures, the competition’s rules were modified to allow both teachers and students to submit student artwork. Additionally, the restriction was lifted on five pieces of artwork per school. There is a maximum of one submission per student.

The winning submission will be exhibited in the U.S. Capitol for a year. The second- and third-place pieces will be displayed in the congressman’s district and Washington, D.C., offices, respectively.

Information and guidelines for submissions are available on Schneider’s website at https://schneider.house.gov/services/art-competition.
