Letter: The peaceful transfer

keyboard, letter to the editor

To the Editor:

When you read this, the inauguration of Joe Biden as president will have taken place. We pray that it has been a peaceful transfer. Mr. Biden has set the goals of mending differences and building community.

It is evident that the far right has developed a kind of community. We will need to have empathy in understanding that form of community. Let us work together to find courage to cope with the difficulties without hatred. Community at the national level will depend upon a base at the local level. A lot is up to us as we support city, church and school as we build a base for community at the national level. We will need to find a workable middle vs. extremism.

We can profit by listening to the words of Lincoln as he faced the incredible division of our country in the Civil War. At one point he said, “Yelling at people, trying to force them to see the error of their ways ... was futile.” He later said, “a drop of honey catches more flies than a gallon [of] gall”
