Yorkville School District to complete high school roof project

Third phase of restoration work to take place over the summer break

YORKVILLE – Plans are moving ahead for completion this summer of a three-year roof restoration project at Yorkville High School.

The Yorkville School Board is expected to approve the project on Feb. 28. Board members reviewed the plans during a recent committee meeting.

The school administration had budgeted the work at $525,000, but the low bid from Crowther Roofing & Sheet Metal of Romeoville came in at $460,970, said District 115 Director of Facility Operations Heather DiVerde.

The high school building, located at 797 Game Farm Road, was constructed in 1996. A preventative maintenance program has both helped to extend the life of the roof, DiVerde said, as well as to allow for the restoration work as opposed to a complete tear-off.

The restoration project has been underway the past two summers. The work is for the original building and not for additions constructed later. This summer’s work will cover about 43,700 square feet of the roof.

The work will involve removal of the roof membrane and insulation as determined by an infrared scan of the roof, used to locate any water infiltration, DiVerde said.

The membrane and insulation will be replaced as needed and then the entire roof area will be recoated with a coal-tar product, DiVerde said.

District 115 Finance Director Mindy Bradford said the project will be paid from the district’s Capital Projects Fund. The school district budgets for $750,000 in capital improvement projects each year, Bradford said.

Work on roof the project is expected to start immediately following the end of the current school year, DiVerde said.
