River Fest bringing live music, cardboard boat race to downtown Yorkville Friday, Saturday

The return of community celebrations will continue in downtown Yorkville this Friday and Saturday, July 16 and 17, with the city’s River Fest.

Organized by the Yorkville Parks and Recreation Department, Riverfront Park will fill up from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Friday, July 16, with a touch-a-truck event from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and live music from Back Country Road from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Saturday’s festivities will begin at noon and last until 10 p.m., starting with live country music from Prairie Station from noon to 2 p.m. Nashville Electric Company continues the live music from 3 to 5 p.m., and Whiskey Romance will close out the night from 7 to 10 p.m.

Family activities will be offered throughout the day, with two scavenger hunts from noon to 5 p.m. and character meet-and-greets from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

The Illinois Whitewater Festival will be returning to the Marge Cline Whitewater Course at Riverfront Park on Saturday. For information, call the Yorkville Parks and Recreation Department at 630-553-4357.

Patrons can take part in craft beer tasting from six local breweries from 2 to 6 p.m. Tickets cost $15 a person or $25 a couple, and include a 14 oz. souvenir glass.

Cash prizes offered in cardboard boat race

The cardboard boat race is also returning, with cash prizes awarded to the three fastest boats and three boats voted Best in Show.

Voting for Best in Show will begin at 4 p.m. Saturday, followed by the race at 5:30 p.m. Registration can be done Saturday, and boats must arrive at Riverfront Park no later than 3:30 p.m.

Life vests, helmets and paddles will be supplied, and kids are encouraged to participate. Information can be found on the Cardboard Canoe Race Facebook page.

Boats can be built with corrugated cardboard, cardboard blocks, cardboard tubes, duct and masking tape, and latex paint materials. Boats cannot contain wood, plastic foam, metal, fiberglass, plastic, sheathing, coated Sona-Tubes, silicon, wax, tar, caulking compounds, staples, clamps or screws.
